| As a student of architecture at the University of Oregon, I worked on a special study analyzing and illustrating
the Alvar Aalto library built at the Mt. Angel Benedictine Abbey. This required many visits to the Monastery and over
time I had the privilege to become involved with the renovation of a stone wine cellar into an art studio called The Fort.
The old cellar was built into the hillside next to the library and was taken over by a young group of brothers. They were
full of enthusiasm and energy, but had limited funds to do this project. A fellow student, Dan Baldner joined me and
our work with the brothers successfully focused on a renovation that optimized the cellars potential as a studio
with natural light while keeping much of the structures original charm. Equally important, the restructuring was
kept simple enough that the brothers were able to build it themselves.
