| Reclaiming the charm and character of a turn of the century, Capitol Hill mansion, after decades of "modernization" was the focus of this kitchen and family room project. The kitchen had been poorly cut up, with ceiling
lowered and detail moldings stripped away. In response the design employed architectural devices traditionally used in
late 19th century entryways by using low walls and columns (whose tapered design was borrowed from
the existing porch) to define the opening from the kitchen to the new family room. The ceilings were raised back
to their original ten-foot height, the original molding details were restored, aluminum windows were replaced
with wood, and the kitchen was rebuilt with a new layout, appliances, and solid wood painted cabinets and
granite topped cooking island. The creation of a hardworking kitchen with a child friendly connection to the family
room along with its restored elegance was the dual success of this project.
